An American-style deli in downtown Uvita is an unexpected sight. More surprising still, the chefs at Road Shack Deli smoke their own meats, fry their own potato chips, craft all their own sauces and serve Libertas, Costa Rica's most popular craft beer.

Just  take a gander at the colorful chalk-board menus and you'll see the work put into the sandwiches made with braised pork shoulder, pulled pork, roast beef, fresh sliced ham, bacon decorated with a colorful palette of sauces including wasabi-cranberry relish, horseradish cream cheese, whole-grain mustard and basil aoli.

All the sandwiches come in deli-style baskets with a helping of homemade potato chips and a side of slaw, potato or pasta salad.  The meatiest sandwich on the menu has got to be the aptly-named Sky High, $10, comes on French bread piled with hot pastrami, coleslaw, melted Swiss cheese and Russian dressing. The award for most creative goes to the wasabi-cranberry sauce spread on the Mother Clucker, $9, made with turkey and melted cheddar.


Chalkboard menus, cold cases and pickle jars almost make you feel like you're in the U.S., that is, until you step outside and relax among the tables on the patio surrounded by tropical vegetation and homes just off the main road in Uvita.


It's a take-out counter. Laid back, pour your own iced tea and water while waiting for your sandwich.
