New 1,000 and 2,000 CRC Bills

Last year, the Costa Rican Central Bank announced its new lineup of national bills that included redesigns of the existing 1,000 CRC, 2,000 CRC, 5,000 CRC and 10,000 CRC bills. On June 20 this week, the public was introduced to the new 1,000 and 2,000 CRC bills, which will replace the older notes by September 1, 2011.

If you currently have any older 1,000 and 2,000 CRC bills, make sure to spend or exchange them (at any private or state bank) before August 31st, or they will lose their value. The vibrant new bills are already available in ATMs and banks throughout the country.

Similar to the orange 20,000 CRC bill that was initiated last August, each bill features a unique design, highlighting local wildlife, an historical figure, and a Costa Rican ecosystem. The new notes range in size from smaller to larger depending on denomination.

The new 1,000 CRC note maintains its red color and displays former president Braulio Carrillo on one side and a deer grazing in tropical dry forest on the other. The light blue 2,000 CRC redesign features politician Mauro Fernandez Acuna on the front, and a bull shark and coral reef on the back. The multihued bills are so colorful and unique, you may be tempted to save a couple as souvenirs or collector's items!
