read more closeThe CPR-certified instructor, nicknamed "Pollo", has been teaching surf lessons since 2001 and bought the Pollo Surf School in 2008. A licensed guide with over a decade of experience, "Pollo" meets you in front of Casa Bambu (or whichever specific place you coordinate beforehand) and walks you over to the beach, where he spends half hour on the sand showing you all the necessary techniques to get started. You get equipped with a rash guard and a surfboard, that gets attached to your ankle like a dog on a leash, preventing the waves from separating you and your new favorite riding toy.
You paddle through the gentle waves, away from the shallow rocky waters, and turn around slowly like a plane on a runway preparing for departure. An instructor grabs on the back of your board as you both look above your shoulders waiting for mother earth to create the perfect ride. You spot a wave slowly rising up like a serpent. You prepare your body to reenact everything you were just taught on the beach.
Just as the wave catches contact with you, your instructor pushes your board to give it the extra torque needed for a beginner to get going. You push your body up with your arms, anchor one foot up, and spin yourself half way around to assume the surfing position. A few seconds of cruising glory makes it all worth it as you experience the wind against your skin, right before you dive sideways back into the ocean. Your head pops out from the surface like a groundhog, with a big smile on your face expressing, "I want to do that again!"
