Travel to Punta Uva Dive Center on a complimentary private shuttle/bus, just a 10-minute drive from Puerto Viejo. Here you'll have the opportunity to change and lock up your things before heading out.
Learn the basics of kayaking on Punta Uva's sandy shores before climbing into your vessel and paddling up the Punta Uva River from its delta to the Caribbean Sea. Guides lead you upriver past towering chilamate, cecropia and cannon ball trees thick with vines and bromeliads. Among the trees hide two- and three-toed sloths, toucans and other colorful animals. While skating along the calm, glassy surface of the river, keep an eye out for emerald basilisk lizards relaxing on the river banks and freshwater turtles poking their heads out of the water beside fallen trees and logs.
After an hour of relaxing kayaking upriver, it's time to polish those newly acquired kayaking skills on the open sea. Head out from the river delta, past the small waves that lap against Punta Uva's golden sands into the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean. Paddle around Punta Uva point and catch a glimpse of the naturally formed cave that cuts the point in half, paddle just a little farther and you'll reach a sandy beach where guides prepare a small snack of pineapple, cookies and water. Enjoy the snack, play among the waves and cool off in the ocean, but get ready to paddle back around the point and conclude the kayaking portion of the adventure.
Then, walk through the coastal rainforest on the tip of Punta Uva. Hike from Punta Uva Dive Center along the beach underneath sea almonds and coconut trees as the small, golden fruit of hobo trees squish under your feet. Head up the natural-dirt- and root-steps to enter the trail – a short half-mile loop to the Punta Uva point. Trek through the bramble of the coastal jungle while keeping an eye out for small wildlife life - snakes, frogs and birds. At the point, the brush clears away revealing a sandstone lip perfect for gazing out across the coastline extending past Puerto Viejo toward Limon. Drink in the views; watch the waves curl over the sharp reef below and prepare for your short trek back through the jungle and back to your hotel.
