Costa Rica 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake Aftermath

After experiencing one of the most powerful earthquakes to strike Costa Rica in more than 21 years, here is the current aftermath:

  • According to Costa Rican Geological Survey (OVSICORI), there have been more than 400 aftershocks between Wednesday 5 p.m. and Thursday at 5 a.m. in Costa Rica.

  • Costa Rica Water Department reports damages in some water distribution tanks so there will not be water supply today in Tamarindo, Flamingo, and some other towns in Guanacaste and Puntarenas.

  • Due to building Inspections at Elementary and High School classes are suspended in Guanacaste province and the towns of Cobano, Lepanto and Paquera in Puntarenas until Monday. 

  • Costa Rica Transportation Department (MOPT) reports a landslide on the main San Carlos Highway in Zarcero. It estimates it will take 3 weeks to clear it and open the highway again. Tourist going to Arenal area from San Jose are encouraged to take the alternative route via San Ramon.

  • A metal bridge in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui, Heredia fell down and left 2,000 people without main road access.

  • A plan to inspect the main bridges, hospitals, and government building facilities of Costa Rica started to be implemented yesterday.

  • The Costa Rica Housing Department reported yesterday that about 100 homes reported some type of damage in the Nicoya Peninsula.
