Cocos Island National Park Expands

In an effort to conserve endangered marine species, Costa Rica recently created an enormous marine protected area in waters surrounding Cocos Island -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site located 340 miles off Costa Rica’s south Pacific coast. Labeled the Seamounts Marine Management Area, it encompasses 2.38 million acres, thus expanding Cocos Island National Park to five times its original size.
