One of the most common plastic surgeries worldwide, rhinoplasty is a procedure to reshape the nose.read more close
It may be performed to straighten an injured nose, improve the general shape of the nose, or increase a patient's ability to breath. The procedure can also change the appearance of the tip or the bridge of the nose, narrow the width of the nostrils, or alter the angle between the nose and upper lip.
There are two main techniques in rhinoplasty today – closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. In a closed rhinoplasty, the incisions are confined to the inside of the nose. This results in minimal swelling, no scarring and a fast recovery. However, this method allows for limited reshaping of the nose.
In the event of a major reshaping procedure, an open rhinoplasty is usually recommended. Incisions are made in the vertical strip of skin separating the nostrils, known as the columella, allowing the surgeon greater visibility and the ability to reshape the nose. Bruising and swelling generally last longer with an open rhinoplasty.
After the incisions are closed, a soft packing material may be placed inside the nose to maintain the structure along the nasal passages. An external splint may also be applied to help the nose retain its new shape. This is usually worn for six to eight days.
After nose surgery, patients can expect mild to severe bruising and swelling in the nose and under eye areas. Cold compresses can help reduce swelling, and pain medications will alleviate any discomfort. Patients are advised to elevate their heads for the first 24 hours post surgery.
The majority of the swelling and bruising should be gone within seven to ten days. Any packing, splints and other dressings are removed within two weeks. Although most patients will see dramatic results after just one month, the final result can take up to six months to see.
Rhinoplasty may be performed under local or general anesthesia and can take place in a hospital, surgical center or office. Depending on the patient, surgery time can last from one to three hours.
