Driving in Costa Rica can often feel like an adventure sport in itself. Poorly signed roads, aggressive drivers and unpredictable weather conditions make just about any trip a challenging experience. Before setting out, ask about road conditions as several roads may become impassable during the rainy season (May through early December). 4WD vehicles are recommended if you plan to explore the country's more remote areas. For more information, please see Driving in Costa Rica.

The following driving directions were recorded as we drove the routes. To make them as accurate as possible, we re-set the odometer at main intersections and provided major landmarks and distances in kilometers.

Note: Recently, several local car rental agencies have begun renting GPS systems that function in Costa Rica -  a great hassle-free method to help visitors explore the country.
