Semi-professional/Amateur Soccer Championships

-Parque Sabana Grande, San Jose

Soccer is a passion for Costa Ricans. May-October marks the semi-professional and amateur soccer season where matches are held in the Estadio Nacional. Masses of fans flock to the championship matches that are held on Sundays during October. More than twenty-two division clubs from around the country vie for the top spot each year. 

 

Costa Rica International Marathon

-Parque La Sabana, San Jose

For runners in search of a challenging event, this San Jose marathon is right on track. The race begins at the national stadium, winds through suburban streets to the airport, and finishes where it began. Runners must deal with heat, hilly terrain, city smog and the occasional cars and buses in this marathon. 

 

Copa del Cafe Junior Tennis Tournament
This junior tennis tournament attracts some of the best international players under the age of 18. Started in 1965 and held at the Costa Rica Country Club, this world-class tournament includes past players such as Ivan Lendl and Bjorn Borg. Ticket prices are 1,000 Colones (roughly $2) for general admission and 3,500 Colones ($7) for reserved seating.

 

Ruta de los Conquistadores Mountain Bike Race

-Los Yoses, San Jose

Costa Rica's largest marathon is a grueling coast-to-coast race that lasts four days. The route descends valleys and climbs mountains and volcanoes, traversing 225 miles of  alternating terrain. La Ruta is typically held annually in October or November.
