Overview:
Temporary visitors are foreign nationals seeking to enter and stay in Costa Rica temporarily for a specific purpose. They stay in Costa Rica for a specific time restricted to an activity or purpose. They are business people/people with job offers, diplomats, foreign students, and tourists.
Temporary visitors are required, but not limited to:
* Have a temporary purpose to visit Costa Rica;
* Agree to depart at the end of their authorized stay or extension
* Be in possession of a passport valid for at least six months
* Maintain a foreign residence
* Show proof of financial support
* Be admissible or have obtained a waiver for any ground of inadmissibility; and
* Abide by the terms and conditions of their stay.
Businesss people/people with job offers, and foreign students must enter Costa Rica with a tourist visa - if they require one (See Visa Resource Center or visa information) - issued at their nearest Consulate of Costa Rica. Then, apply for a temporary residence permit (TRP) at the Department of Temporary Residence Permit and Extension of Stays at the Immigration Deparment of Costa Rica (Departamento de Permisos Temporales y Prorrogas de la Direccion Geenral de Migracion y Extranjeria) before their authorized stay expires.
Diplomats must apply for a at their nearest Consulate of Costa Rica and do not need to file a temporary residence permit.
Tourists are not granted temporary residence permits, they are required to file for an extension of stay.
