Monteverde-GreenSnakeMany of Costa Rica's biological reserves are important sites for tropical rain forest research. They are also home to a wide array of rare and endangered species of flora and fauna.  Some specialize in neotropical ecology and are dedicated to improving natural resource management through innovative research projects and the results they provide. Several biological reserves have research stations where students and volunteers help with the many ongoing projects.

Biological reserves account for 53 acres (.42%) of the national territory.
