Puerto Viejo’s Caribbean influence means spicy appetizers, coconut-infused dishes, vegetarian delicacies and all-out seafood extravaganzas. With chefs from around the world working in both fine dining restaurants and tiny beachside pizzerias, Puerto Viejo’s offerings can satisfy any craving. Though almost every restaurant and nightspot has its own special flare, here are a few recommendations:
Restaurants:Magic Ginger Conveniently located next to Hotel Kasha in Playa Chiquita, Magic Ginger features a varied menu fusing culinary styles from around the world. A full breakfast and sandwich menu is available, perfectly complimented by a range of local coffees, fruit drinks and other delicious elixirs.

This highly-recommended restaurant offers world fusion cuisine, created by its artisan chef. Fish tacos, stuffed pita sandwiches and tropical gazpacho are only a few of the meals offered. Live music on Thursdays and Saturdays.
Gatta Ci Cova
Next to La Pecora Nera, Gatta Ci Cova offers exquisite Italian food at modest prices. Pumpkin-stuffed ravioli, wood-fired oven pizzas, homemade pastas and fresh Italian bread are highly recommended.
La Pecora Nera
Possibly Puerto Viejo’s most famous and upscale restaurant, La Pecora Nera takes diners on a journey through Italian cuisine. Don’t order from the tiny menu – instead, let owner and chef Ilario Giannoni explain and recommend one of the day’s specials.
Pizzerias
Puerto Viejo is home to many Italian expats, and that can only mean one things: fresh Italian food at great prices. For lunch or an inexpensive dinner, head to one of the area’s oceanside pizzerias, which offer wood-fired oven crusts, fine cheeses and many topping options.
Salsa Brava
Even if you’re not a surfer, you can still enjoy Puerto Viejo’s famed salsa brava – the restaurant, that is! This oceanfront restaurant boasts fantastic ocean views, delicious Mediterranean and Italian food and plenty of colorful décor.
Nightlife:
Puerto Viejo is a party town, especially among younger travelers. Johnny's is the local hot spot for socializing and dancing the night away to popular reggae and classic American tunes. Other happening bars include:
Baba Yaga
Wednesday is Ladies’ Night and Sunday is Reggae night at this hip bar.
Coco Cielo
One of town’s newest nightlife offerings, Coco Cielo offers great food during the day and ice-cold drinks, including their special margaritas, in the evening.
Maritza’s Bar
If you’re on the prowl for live music, Maritza’s is the place to be on Tuesday nights.
