Extra Clothing & Rain Gear: The weather in Puerto Viejo is unpredictable, so it is best to bring rain gear (poncho, water resistant footwear, umbrella, etc.) and plenty of extra clothing. During heavy rains, wet clothes can take days to dry completely.
Gas Stations: The closest gas station is located between Puerto Viejo and Cahuita, along the main road near the turnoff to Bribri. In case of emergency, several enterprising residents sell gasoline in plastic liter tanks out of their homes for $1 extra per liter, a $4 premium per gallon.
Nightlife: Puerto Viejo is known as a party town. Be careful at night and never, ever buy drugs from someone on the street. The town has seen a climb in local crime over the last few years, much of it attributed to the growing drug trade. Be smart and lock up your valuables whenever you go out, choose well-known and recommended nightspots and carry as little cash as possible.
Wildlife: Puerto Viejo and Cahuita are two of the best places in Costa Rica to see wild animals. Keep in mind that feeding local wildlife (especially the monkeys) is against park rules and is very bad for the animals’ health. Wildlife that is routinely fed by tourists may grow malnourished and develop aggressive tendencies.
