Monteverde

The Monteverde area offers a very eclectic mix of hotels, lodges, hostels, B&B's, cabins and other lodging options. In addition to budget, a visitor’s most important concern, based on their mode of transportation and desired activities, should be location:

Santa Elena: Santa Elena is a small town located just a few miles west of Monteverde. Its small three-street downtown triangle is home to most of the region’s paved roads, as well as the public bus terminal. If arriving without a car, downtown Santa Elena is the most convenient location due to its many restaurants, Internet cafes and hotels within walking distance.

Cerro Plano: Cerro Plano is centrally located between Santa Elena and Monteverde. A paved road passes through Cerro Plano, connecting Santa Elena with the entrance to Monteverde. A car is recommended for those staying in Cerro Plano.

Monteverde: Many of the region’s upscale hotels and lodges are found in Monteverde, located at the base of the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Potholed dirt roads, few restaurants and peaceful seclusion make a rental car a must here, but guests are rewarded by frequent wildlife sightings and panoramic vistas.

Once you’ve decided on where to stay, focus on the price of the hotel you’d like. Budget travelers will find several hostel Monteverde-Cerro-planohotel.jpgand guesthouse options; expect to pay $5-$10 for a dorm bed with breakfast.

Mid-range travelers have a wide selection: rustic lodges, quaint bed and breakfasts, small hotels and beautiful cabins dot the mountainside, offering convenience, clean rooms and hearty breakfasts for $50-$75 per night.

The region’s upscale lodgings offer true luxury, promising fine linens, relaxing Jacuzzi tubs, eco resorts and superb dining for $100-$150 per night.
