The Central Market, built in 1871, is on Avenida Central between Calle 6 and Calle 8.
Here you’ll find the best prices in town on almost anything - flowers, fresh fruits and
vegetables, meats and seafood, beauty products, religious artifacts, handicrafts and
more. Its narrow alleyways are filled with the fragrant aroma of exotic herbs and spices.
Vendors shout out prices to shoppers as they stroll by. This is a great place for people
watching so grab a seat and enjoy.
Be sure to try Costa Rican sherbets (Helados de Sorbetera), a frozen dessert made
with fruit juice or blended fresh fruits, sugar, milk and egg whites. It’s sometimes
served with gelatin. One of the shops, Los Helados de Sorbetera, has been making
this delicacy since 1905. But be on the lookout for muggers and pickpockets, who are
always looking to take advantage of tourists.
