Getting Around Tamarindo

Visitors have several options for getting around town. Many travelers rent a car, either in San Jose or Liberia, to explore the surrounding beaches. 4WD or a car with high clearance is recommended in both the wet and dry seasons, as some of the outlying roads have huge potholes. For those without a car, most tour operators include round-trip transportation to area attractions.

Tamarindo on Foot:

Paved sidewalks lined with cafes, souvenir shops and art galleries make Tamarindo a pleasant place for a stroll. The main street parallels the coast with several beach access points, and ends with a rotunda. Several large shopping plazas are within walking distance of most hotels and condominiums. During the dry season, the dust can be overwhelming, especially along the side streets that are unpaved.

Bicycle and Scooter Rental:

Scooters can be rented by the hour or day. Mountain bikes can also be rented and are an option for those who want some exercise and don't mind biking on a somewhat heavily-trafficked road.

Boat:

Small boats can be hired from the beach for travel across the estuary to Playa Grande. Prices vary, but most captains charge $4 per person one-way.

Car Rental:

Many companies offer standard and 4WD car rentals in Tamarindo, nearby Liberia (at the Daniel Oduber International Airport), and San Jose. This is by far the most convenient way to explore the area. Travelers must have a valid driver's license from their home country to rent a car. An international driver’s license is not necessary.

Taxi:

Taxis and minibuses are plentiful in town and are an easy but somewhat expensive way to get around. Official red taxis are equipped with a meter. For long distance trips, it is best to negotiate a price with the driver beforehand, as the meter can add up. There is a taxi stand across from the Diria Hotel, on the main street in Tamarindo.

Tamarindo to Huacas: $10-15
Tamarindo to Flamingo: $20
Tamarindo to Brasilito/Conchal: $20
Tamarindo to Playa Grande: $25

Public Bus:

Tamarindo and its surrounding towns have a reliable public bus system for getting to and from the area. However, the bus routes are not convenient for local sightseeing.
