About: Arenal is known as the adventure capital of Costa Rica, and for good reason. Travelers can dive head-first into an exciting world of waterfall rappelling, whitewater rafting, bungee jumping and canopy tours. Of course, there’s plenty on offer for those seeking rest and relaxation: volcano-fed hot springs dot the region, day spas promise to knead away sore muscles, and volcano-view hotels offer the perfect backdrop for picturesque contemplation. Located in the fertile Northern Region, Arenal and La Fortuna are a three-to-four-hour scenic drive from San Jose. The bustling town of La Fortuna, with its explosive view of Arenal Volcano, is a hotbed for ecotourism. Wildlife encounters are common on hikes through Arenal Volcano National Park and various private reserves, where local guides enlighten visitors about the native flora and fauna. Numerous operators specialize in adventure tours, from horseback riding and sport fishing to tranquil safari floats. Birders and wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy Arenal’s hanging bridges, where a series of suspension and fixed bridges meander through the treetops, offering panoramic views of Arenal Volcano, Lake Arenal and the dense jungle below.
Lava viewing can be hit or miss, with unpredictable clouds rolling in at a moment’s notice, obscuring Arenal's near-perfect cone. This is most common during the green season, May through November, though clear nights are still possible. Visitors that desire a perfect, cloudless evening are encouraged to stay at least one week. With no shortage of activities for both the adventurer and wildlife enthusiast, this shouldn’t be a problem.
