Arenal is the adventure capital of Costa Rica, and some even say of the world. On the menu for my week-long travels: hiking to Rio Celeste, spelunking at Venado Caverns, becoming a human projectile on Arenal Bungee’s catapult, whitewater rafting on the Balsa River, lava-watching at Arenal Volcano, soaking in volcanic hot springs, and so much more. My new friends from the Iguana Lodge and I stepped off the boat and into an entirely different space and time. Just 20 minutes across the Golfo Dulce from Puerto Jimenez, the Osa Wildlife Sanctuary is so lush and remote that it seemed we could have just as easily been observing dinosaurs in place of local wildlife.

Writing this a month later, I am shocked that my camera had not died sooner. How was it able to overcome all the battering and abuse I had put it through? Over the past year in Costa Rica it had survived being dropped in the jungle, slammed against cave walls, and brought along on windy days at the beach, boat excursions, and canopy tours – but apparently it couldn’t endure sitting in the middle of a harmless herd of cows.
