I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to pull myself out of bed at 5:22 a.m. Finding it effortless to relax in this tiny, quiet town, I had gone to sleep at 9:30 p.m. the night before, and as a result woke up before my alarm for the first time in weeks. I like to wake up with the sun, and in Costa Rica, this means that I get up early – 6:30 a.m. is sleeping in. Cesar, however, has completely redefined the term “early bird.” He bounced out of his hotel room almost every pitch-black morning, scouting for photos during the very earliest moments of daylight. One of the main attractions at Hacienda Pozo Azul is their cabalgata, an easy horseback ride through small streams and backcountry roads, with opportunities to gallop along the way.
