The Central Valley is one of my favorite regions in Costa Rica — the rolling hills are painted an almost impossible green and there is so much to see and do. A year ago, I decided to explore the area during a series of day trips, and the experience only served to make me love the region even more. In preparation for today’s canopy tour, I ate a protein-filled vegetable omelet at Flamingo Beach Resort’s restaurant, Arenas. However, I probably would have skipped breakfast had I known what a long, rocky road I would be bumping along en route to the countryside.

A trip to Arenal would not be complete without the high-flying fun of a Sky Trek canopy tour. Every day—rain or shine—hundreds of tourists rocket more than six miles over treetop canopies at speeds topping 50 mph. The tour’s zip lines span up to 2,475 feet (that’s half a mile!), and crisscross some of the country’s most spectacular scenery.
