I awoke to the seventh sunny day this week. I could hardly believe my luck — we were well into 2009’s rainy season, but the sky had been mostly blue, save for the occasional puffy, white cloud and the constant smoke emitted by Arenal Volcano. I was excited, if a little nervous, to visit the Venado Caverns today. The idea of ancient, wet rocks and sleeping bats intrigued me, but I wondered if I would feel claustrophobic. Several people had warned me that a sudden fear could envelop me; in fact, Noelia, who had been one of my guides to Rio Celeste, had told me that she can’t explore the caverns because of sudden-onset claustrophobia. I awoke to sun shining in my window, muscles screaming from yesterday’s mega hike, and excitement for the day’s activities. For the last time, I admired the view of Arenal from my hotel’s grounds. After breakfast, I hopped into the Canoa Aventura van.
