Day 7: Kayaks and Spider Bites

Today was a fairly mellow day. I woke up with sore calves from all the hiking I had done in the past week, but had plans to push through the pain. I was going to kayak up the Agujitas River and around Drake Bay, and then hike the trail behind Aguila de Osa Inn.
The dock manager chose a suitable single kayak, and let me know that another couple had left just a half an hour earlier – if I hurried, I could probably catch up with them.

Day 6: Corcovado National Park: Sirena

Today’s voyage to Corcovado’s Sirena ranger station yielded so many opportunities to see rare and exquisite animals that it even trumped yesterday’s excursion.
I saw more species during the first twenty minutes at this remote location than I did in all of the previous day; although locals have assured me that this may be attributed to plain luck.
After an hour-long boat ride from Drake Bay, our group of eight arrived at Corcovado’s Sirena headquarters. The ranger station was a half-mile walk from the beach, and within minutes we had seen a furry three-toed sloth high up …

Day 5: Corcovado National Park: San Pedrillo

Our tour left at 7:00 a.m. in a covered boat aimed at San Pedrillo, the closer of the two Corcovado ranger stations most easily accessed from Drake Bay. A small wooden building partially enclosing a number of camping tents, and a few picnic tables sat on a patch of grass just off the beach.
Tony, our guide, supplied fresh beach towels and chilled waters for us to take on the first leg of the hike. He informed our party that Corcovado is thought to contain 2.5% of the earth’s animal species – much like the Amazon …
