Travels to Manzanillo
Before this trip, I had never been to the Southern Caribbean coast before, and I didn’t quite know what to expect — my guidebooks focused mostly on the Puerto Viejo party scene and surfing Salsa Brava, but I knew there was much more beneath the surface. In fact, many of my friends know and love the Southern Caribbean, and had regaled me with stories of white sand beaches, reggae parties and a word or two about the Bribri, one of Costa Rica’s last remaining indigenous populations.

After yesterday’s vaguely blue skies, I had high hopes for today’s activity — a horseback ride along Playa Negra, Cahuita’s black sand beach. We woke up early, found our next hotel and then settled down for breakfast — Vincent gobbled down some rice and beans while I enjoyed a banana pancake.

Since I needed to take care of some business in Puerto Viejo, I decided to take one day while I was there to do some of the things I had not yet done in the South Caribbean (the area around Cahuita and south to Manzanillo).
I awoke in the comfort of one of my favorite hotels in Puerto Viejo, Kaya’s Place. The smell of bacon, coffee, eggs and fresh bread wafting from the kitchen mixing with the sweet smell of the warm ocean air.
