Travels to Northern Region
I awoke to the seventh sunny day this week. I could hardly believe my luck — we were well into 2009’s rainy season, but the sky had been mostly blue, save for the occasional puffy, white cloud and the constant smoke emitted by Arenal Volcano. The smattering of clouds would serve as the ideal cover for a safari float, neither blocking out the sun nor letting the day get too hot.

I was excited, if a little nervous, to visit the Venado Caverns today. The idea of ancient, wet rocks and sleeping bats intrigued me, but I wondered if I would feel claustrophobic. Several people had warned me that a sudden fear could envelop me; in fact, Noelia, who had been one of my guides to Rio Celeste, had told me that she can’t explore the caverns because of sudden-onset claustrophobia. I didn’t believe it would happen to me, but I was prepared for the possibility.

I woke up and practically bounced out of bed. Today, after a volcano hike, I would head to Baldi Hot Springs and, finally, to a highly-awaited and much anticipated spa treatment at Montana de Fuego’s En Gadi Spa.
