Travels to Isla Tortuga
Our travels to Cabuya, Montezuma, Santa Teresa, and Mal Pais began with one of the most entertaining means of transport in the country: the Puntarenas Ferry. The hour-long journey departed from the shores of Puntarenas, passing by seagulls and stunning vistas en route to the Nicoya. The three-tiered boat boasted three distinct atmospheres. The lowest level was quiet, the middle somewhat social, and the highest an all out party – complete with music, dancing and plenty of beer flowing.

Isla Tortuga (Turtle Island) never ceases to amaze me. Today I went for the third time in my life, each visit better than the last. While the boat ride there was a bit bumpy, and I was stuck next to some very loud French-Canadians, I found the snorkeling to be phenomenal and well worth the scenic 45-minute trip across the water from Montezuma.

We awoke early to the sound of rain. I looked at my watch: 6 a.m. We had a boat tour to Turtle Island (Isla Tortuga) planned in three hours with Turismo Curu tour company. We were departing one hour east of Mal Pais, from Curu National Wildlife Refuge.
The wildlife refuge is home to countless species of animals, and runs a number of conservation projects (such as caring for scarlet macaws, coral reefs, spider monkeys, parrots and other migratory birds) crucial to preserving Costa Rica’s natural beauty.
