Travels to Monteverde, Santa Elena and Cerro Plano
After a generous helping of a typical rice-and-beans breakfast, Vincent and I decided to walk to the Ecological Sanctuary, just a mile from our hotel. It was a beautiful day, if a bit chilly, and the walk promised to be pleasant.
Rambling past an ice cream parlor, a Latin fusion restaurant and a recommended steak house, we moved onto an even bumpier dirt road. Mallory was leaving on the 6:30 a.m. public bus for San Jose this morning. After saying our goodbyes, I readied for the day ahead and then made my way to the main dining room for breakfast. Pancakes, fresh fruit and coffee waited, warming and refreshing me.
A few hours after the filling breakfast, Vincent arrived. Just returned from the Galapagos Islands, he was ready and excited to start taking photos of Monteverde’s scenic panoramas and great, green mountains. Today, we would visit the renowned Frog Pond, or ranario, a tour I eagerly anticipated.

The first sound I heard was the wind. Whistling through the Tree House’s central trunk and branches, it heralded the beginning of a chilly day and an exhilarating canopy tour. Bundling up in the only sweatshirt I had brought to Monteverde, I went down to breakfast with Mallory.
