San Jose Day Trip: Flying Through the Trees at Braulio Carrillo

The private shuttle picked me up at 10 a.m., and I was welcomed on board with smiles and a chorus of hellos. Alvaro, our guide, explained that our trip to the private reserve, adjacent to Braulio Carrillo National Park, would take about an hour. Ominously, he offered rain ponchos to us all – “well we’re going to a rainforest, after all,” he said with a grin. San Jose Day Trip: A Country Overview at INBioparque

The Heredia-San Jose bus dropped me off just three blocks from INBioparque’s main entrance. Heading west, I walked along the quiet and sunny Santo Domingo boulevard, mentally reviewing what I already knew about the wilderness park. I was excited: though I live in Costa Rica, it’s almost impossible to see and do everything that the country has to offer. INBioparque would provide me with a general overview of Costa Rica’s major ecosystems, and allow me to explore both the flora and fauna that makes each so unique.

San Jose Day Trip: Intro to INBioparque

I saw the signs every time I entered Heredia from San Jose, but had never visited the popular wildlife park. However, with a trip to INBioparque planned for just a few days ahead, I decided to read up on the organization. What I learned was not only inspiring, but exciting – Costa Rica’s beautiful mountains, forests, beaches and volcanoes were clearly protected by knowledgeable and concerned individuals.
