Melia Cariari Country ClubPrivate*. Located just outside of the city of San Jose, this is the first championship 18-hole golf course in Costa Rica. Once a coffee plantation, Cariari is currently known to be one of the best golf courses in Central America. Back in the mid seventies, Tom Fazio, now a world famous golf architect, worked with his Uncle George Fazio to help develop this course. The Cariari Country Club proudly hosted the Costa Rica Open in February 2006. This exclusive club is set in the heart of the central valley and surrounded by coffee plantations. Its heavily wooded, tree-lined fairways demand a precise shot off the tee with accuracy being more important here than distance. Large rolling greens are well guarded by cleverly placed sand pits.

This beautifully designed, 18-hole public course was cleverly designed so that even during the rainiest months of the year (September and October), it is playable. There are 15 separate lakes, connected by small streams, sculpted by gently sloping, smooth greens. Luxuriant tropical gardens in the foreground, delicately frame the western horizon’s mountainous landscape. To the north, popular volcanoes like Poas, Irazu and Barva are visible.
