Four Seasons Golf Club Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo

One of the newer Costa Rican golf courses, the Four Seasons Golf Club is the northern most golf course in the country.   Located on the Papagayo Peninsula in the Guanacaste Province (just 40 minutes from Liberia), this new Arnold Palmer designed course is gaining popularity.  The Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica was recently rated by Condé Nast Traveler as the number one resort in Central and South America.

The resort is located on the point of the Papagayo Peninsula, where 180° views can be enjoyed overlooking two striking Pacific Bays, Bahías Culebra and Huevos.  The Palmer course takes advantage of natural elevation changes and the constant ocean breezes add to the challenge.  The wide rolling fairways meander between large sculpted greens offering mesmerizing ocean views on at least 14 of the holes.  A plethora of sea birds and other wildlife accompany golfers through the rise and fall of the course. Playing this course is an impressive experience and a true test of one’s golfing skills.

Pre-reserved tee times are available only to guests or members of the Four Seasons Golf Club Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo.  Unhurried, leisurely rounds of golf are the norm.

Hacienda Pinilla

This 18-hole beach front championship course is located in the Guanacaste Province on the North Pacific Coast near Playas Langosta and Avellana.  The Hacienda Pinilla golf course is part of a much larger, exclusive resort community of the same name with private residences, hotels, hiking trails, an equestrian center and more.

This ocean side course offers vast expanses of open, fast rolling greens that stand in stark contrast to the native dry prairie landscape surrounding the golf course.  The most challenging features of this course are the persistent ocean winds and the cleverly placed pot bunkers.  The two oceanside greens can also be challenging especially when you consider that snorkeling might be involved if you you tend to slice the ball.

Best of all, more than 250,000 native trees have been planted in an effort to ecologically develop this property and to help it “harmoniously co-exist… with the natural environment” (Mike Young).  It has been given the honor of an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for its environmentally sensitive development. This course is truly unique and guaranteed to offer you a challenging and memorable experience.

Reserva Conchal Golf Club (Garra de Leon)

The Garra de Leon Golf Course is part of an elite resort, the Melía Playa Conchal Beach & Golf Resort, located in the Guanacaste Province on the North Pacific coast of Costa Rica.  The Resort is one of the most luxurious and exceptional golf and beach resorts in Central America.

Gently nestled in the dry tropical forest, the wide and inviting fairways present picture perfect views and unique challenges. The course is known for its dramatic elevation changes and because of its mere size; this is a BIG course with wide open spaces.  White sand beaches border some of the greens and panoramic views and wildlife sightings (monkeys, lizards, Oropendulas) provide a peaceful and entertaining setting.

Sloping greens intermingle with fresh water lakes and ravines throughout the course.  The Bermuda grass greens are rather unforgiving.  Accuracy is essential here.  The overall attention to detail and natural feeling of this course has led to its status as one of the best in Costa Rica.

Tee times are by reservation only and are available exclusively to guests of the resort.  The often un-crowded, the Garra de Leon experience extends beyond the golf course. The enormous pool, six restaurants, elegant clubhouse, and other activities like horseback riding and snorkeling and kayaking assure a complete vacation.

Royal Pacific Golf & Country Club

The Royal Pacific Golf & Country Club is also in the Guanacaste Province not far from the Garra de Leon course.

This 18-hole championship course has a different feel than others in this region.  Nestled in the mountainous landscape, its western edge is bordered by a river where the first nine holes follow a relatively flat path with many water hazards.  The back half has steeper fairways carved out of rocky territory.  Accuracy is of the most importance here.

Tango Mar

This executive 9-hole, par-3 and -4 golf course is part of the Tango Mar Hotel Beach & Golf Resort.  Located at Playa Quisales on the Nicoya Peninsula in the Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica, this is a private resort nestled in-between two uniquely and well protected nature reserves.

Besides being surrounded by absolute scenic beauty, (as if that were not enough,) the Tango Mar also is home to a challenging golf course, best appreciated for its short game.  The 2000-yard course is “perfect for tuning up the most important and most neglected part of your game: the short game” (Landy Blank, Costa Rica Outdoors, March 1997).

The lush landscape envelops the course and frames panoramic vistas from atop cliffs over the Pacific.   The course is never crowded and there is no need to schedule tee times.  The golf facilities are run through the reception so essentially, the course never closes.  Anyone who pays the greens fee can play the course.  Tango Mar is a perfect way to mix a romantic getaway with a little golf.
