Places To See - Volcanoes

Location: Poas Volcano National Park, Central Volcanic Mountain Range

Altitude: 2060 meters (6759 feet)

To the northwest of Poás is the demolished crater of El Viejo that has not been active for thousands of years. It slopes are now filled with cypress and cedars.

El Viejo (the old man) was once called "La Mina" ("The Mine") after a businessman who opened a trial mine in order to extract pumice stone for the manufacturing of soap. The countryside is covered by beautiful cedar and heart of palm forests. It is an ideal place to hike in the jungle and get a closer look to nature.

You can get there via "Bajos del Toro" or "Toro Amarillo" in Palmira.
