About:

This remote rainforest lodge and reserve comprises 3300 acres of high-altitude rainforest and is accessible only by horse or tractor-pulled cart. The reserve’s tractor leaves the village of Las Horquetas (a 25-minute drive from Puerto Viejo) twice a day, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., arriving at the lodge three hours later.  Rara Avis hosts a variety of research and educational pursuits, ranging from local elementary students learning about the relationship between conservation and development, to field researchers surveying plant and animal life. 

 

Weather:

64-89° F year-round, average humidity 83%. The region is warm and humid year-round and has no distinct “dry season”. Morning or late afternoon showers can be expected throughout the year.

 

Activities:

Activities include guided nature walks through rugged jungle, swimming under waterfalls and bird & wildlife watching.

 

Flora & Fauna:

Flora: Primitive ferns, mosses, orchids and flowering plants

Fauna: Monkeys, tapirs, ocelots and jaguars, fer-de-lance, bushmaster, also the boa constrictor.

Getting There:

A tractor-drawn cart leaves Las Horquetas at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.daily for the 15 km (9.3 mi.) ride to Rara Avis. If you prefer a horse, you can rent one for $15. The horse must be home by midnight.

The tractor departs Rara Avis Reserve at 2 p.m. If you're scheduled to catch the 5:15 bus back San Jose, forget it. The bus will be gone by the time you get back to Las Horquetas.

The Rara Avis office in Las Horquetas will call a taxi for you. The cost is $25 for a ride to the Guapiles Highway where you can flag down a bus going to San Jose.
