About: Lomas Barbudal is known as the "insect park" thanks to large the number of bugs that make this their home. There are over 250 species of bees living here (which accounts for almost 25% of the entire world’s bee species), as well as 60 species of moths and countless species of countless other insects sharing this happy insect home. Many of the trees that grow here are in danger of extinction.
Facilities:There is a visitor center, The Friends of Lomas Barbudal, in Bagaces where you can pick up trail guides and visit their displays. At the entrance to the Park, there is a small museum. Park information is also available here.
Activities:Hiking is available on unmarked trails during the dry season.
Flora & Fauna:Flora: Some of the park’s forest is semi-deciduous to decidious. Some trees, such as spiny cedar, gumbo-limbo and wild plum, drop their leaves during the dry season. In other places, the woods are dense with a wide variety of evergreen trees set in "riparian" groves ("riparian" means the trees grow in strips along the river banks). The "gallery forest" consists of a mixture of evergreen and deciduous species, including chicle trees, rubber and tempisque trees. In other areas of the park, you'll find "savannas," open grasslands that boast of only a scattering of trees, mainly the rough-leaf tree and the shoemaker's tree. Fauna: Birds: turkey vulture, elegant trogon, scarlet macaw and keel-billed toucan; 130 species in all.
