In an effort to protect one of Costa Rica’s most important assets, the Blue Ecological Flag Program was established in 1996.  This flag is awarded to coastal communities who meet certain environmental standards set by the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewage Systems (AyA). 

Annually, communities are evaluated based on water quality, beach cleanliness, access to potable water, treatment of residual waters, environmental education, security and administration.

The following are grouped by Province and are current recipients of the Blue Flag:
