Services:
Wireless Internet and Cafes
There
is wireless in Puerto Viejo. The Jungle Internet café sells wireless
minutes available for use from within almost the entire city of Puerto
Viejo. Just stop by their office, located on the same street as the
Bread & Chocolate Café and buy your block of minutes. This is the
first location in Costa Rica where we have found this option available.
There are also several internet cafes around town.
Facilities:
Banks
There
is one bank in Puerto Viejo, the Banco de Costa Rica and there is an
ATM here but it only accepts Visa and Plus network cards (no
Mastercards).
Medical Facilities
There
is a Red Cross (Cruz Roja) providing emergency service and a small
public hospital in Hone Creek providing basic medical services. The
next closest hospital is in Limón, offering more advanced care.

Gas Stations
There are no gas stations in the
Puerto Viejo area. The closest gas station is found before you reach
Cahuita while traveling south on Route 36. After you pass the Limón
Airport, drive another 30 minutes or so and find the large gas station
on your right (Pass the road sign that says “Bomba 5km). If you need
gas while in town, ask around and you will likely be directed to the
local “station” where they sell gas out of plastic liter bottles for $1
more per liter than at the gas station- an expensive but valuable
recourse if you need gas.
Police
A police station is located 2 blocks south of the bus stop (750-0230)
