For a small town, Atenas has many of the amenities of a larger city. Supermarkets, gas stations, pharmacies, banks, shops, a post office, internet cafes and restaurants are all within walking distance of each other.

Services:

Phones
Cell phones work in Atenas. There are several pay phones in town and Rick’s Internet Cafe and InterCopy Internet Cafe provide international phone call services at reasonable prices.
 

Internet Cafes:

Rick’s Internet Cafe

Located on the corner of central park in an old peach colored building, Rick’s has five computers, fax services and serves as a tourist center with information on real estate and car rentals. American-style breakfasts, pasta, pizzas and sandwiches are served.
Open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sundays 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
 

Atenas Cafecito
Internet cafe, souvenir and coffee shop. Located in a bright yellow building, one block east of the Catholic Church. Also provides tourist information.
Open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.

InterCopy Internet
One block northwest of the park, next to a beauty salon, offers internet services, international phone calls and sells computer equipment and supplies.
Open Monday through Saturday 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., Sundays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
 

Unitec Computacion
Internet cafe, across from the Atenas gym, one block south and 1 blok west of the park.
Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays until 6 p.m.

Faxes
Faxes can be sent and received at Rick’s Internet Cafe and InterCopy Internet.

 

Facilities:

ATMs and Banks
Banco Nacional, located on the corner of central park, has an ATM that dispenses both colones and US dollars. Open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  

Banco de Costa Rica, one block southwest of the park, is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and has an ATM machine.

Banco Popular, two blocks northwest of the park also has an ATM. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Saturdays 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. 

A new Banco Cuscatlan ATM machine is located adjacent to the Coopeatenas supermarket, just past the gas station on Highway 3, the main road that passes by Atenas.
 

Medical Facilities
The Atenas branch of the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) provides 24-hour ambulance service. For minor injuries (cuts, fractures etc.), patients are taken to the Atenas Clinic that is staffed with local doctors. Major injuries are taken to Hospital San Rafael, located in Alajuela. Patients can also opt to go to the privately run CIMA Hospital in Escazu, which caters to tourists.

Gas Stations
There is one gas station in Atenas, on the main road (Highway 3) next to the Coopeatenas supermarket.

Post Office
The local post office is diagonal to the Atenas gym, one block south and a half a block west of the park. Open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
