Restaurants:
From sushi to spicy jerk chicken, Puerto Viejo restaurants offer something for everyone. Pizza and seafood restaurants are popular as are those serving typical Costa Rican food and Caribbean style dishes. Here are a few recommended spots:
Bread & Chocolate Bakery Café
In central Puerto Viejo, this is a must visit. Homemade breads including bagels, muffins, brownies and other scrumptious desserts are available and many are fresh baked daily. The fresh toasted bagels with cream cheese are a favorite.
Lydias Café
Offers inexpensive traditional Costa Rican food (rice, beans, salad, roasted plantain and chicken or fish).
Chili Rojo
Specializes in vegetarian entrees and Thai cuisine. The Thai chicken salad and whole lobster dinner with coconut milk, yellow curry and lemon grass are delicious. The owner has traveled the world studying international cuisines and his efforts definitely shine in their daily specials.
Jenni’s Italian Restaurant
True Italian entrees featuring homemade breads and pastas - fantastic gnocchi.
Las Lapas
A Pennsylvania Dutch ice cream shop, on the road along the beach. After crossing the little bridge into Puerto Viejo, take the first left and it will be on your right.
Nightlife:
Puerto Viejo is known as a party town, especially among younger travelers. Bars and discos begin to fill up around 11 p.m. and dancing continues until dawn. Johnnys and Stanfords are the local hot spots for socializing and dancing the night away to popular Latin, reggae and classic American tunes.
