Gas Stations
: There are no gas stations in the Puerto Viejo area.  The closest gas station is found before you reach Cahuita while traveling south on Route 36.  After you pass the Limón Airport, drive another 30 minutes or so and find the large gas station on your right (Pass the road sign that says “Bomba 5km).  If you need gas while in town, ask around and you will likely be directed to the local “station” where they sell gas out of plastic liter bottles for $1 more per liter than at the gas station- an expensive but valuable recourse if you need gas.

Clothing: Bring plenty of extra clothing because it is wet and humid here. Damp clothes can take days to dry. Items to bring include: umbrella, flip flops, comfortable hiking shoes and a bathing suit (or two).

Travelers Warning: Recent years have seen an increase in crime and petty theft in Puerto Viejo. An increasing drug trade in the area is partly to blame. Travelers are often targeted by drug dealers as potential customers; use common sense and lock your valuables in your room. Carry only enough money for the day and a copy of your passport on your person.
