About:

Located on the Golfo Dulce side of  the Osa Peninsula, the frontier town of Puerto Jimenez is roughly an hour and a half from Corcovado National Park, one of the most biologically diverse regions on earth. Gold mining and logging transformed this sleepy, backwater pueblo into a thriving town in the late 1960’s. Despite the logging industry and influx of gold miners, Puerto Jimenez retains a small-town ambiance and slow pace.

Today, backpackers and eco-tourists are drawn to the amazing wildlife and quiet beaches of this coastal town. The area’s mangrove swamps and verdant rainforests are home to a myriad of fauna, including scarlet macaws, white-faced monkeys, caiman and ocelots. Visitors can kayak in the estuaries of nearby Rio Platanares, an excellent spot for birding and wildlife watching.  Puerto Jimenez is also the gateway to the unspoiled beaches of Cabo Matapalo (also known as a hot spot for surfing),  just 17 kilometers south.

A number of adventure tours can be arranged in town. Sport fishing excursions, morning bird walks, dolphin watching, snorkeling and boat tours around the Golfo Dulce are a few of the exciting activities on offer. A ranger station in Puerto Jimenez provides information on trails and wildlife to visitors hiking in Corcovado National Park. Hiring a naturalist guide is recommended to help spot animals while trekking through the park.

Puerto Jimenez has a nice selection of budget and luxury accommodations. Rustic beach cabinas can be had for as little as $10 a night, while mid-range options include thatch-roof bungalows and spacious cabinas with TV, internet and telephone. For those who want to splash out, a number of top-end eco-lodges have magnificent views, gourmet cuisine and stylish rooms.

With its remote location, most visitors opt to fly to Puerto Jimenez on one of Costa Rica’s local carriers. The journey by bus, boat and/or car can take anywhere from seven to ten hours from San Jose, depending on weather and road conditions.

Stunning scenery, abundant wildlife and an untamed frontier atmosphere make Puerto Jimenez a unique and worthwhile destination on the Osa Peninsula.
