About:
Located in the Central Valley among rolling hills and sugar cane plantations, Grecia is a quaint town with a mild climate and several worthy attractions. Voted the cleanest Latin American town, Grecia boasts an immaculate central park which is beautifully-landscaped and dotted with huge shade trees. The park is an ideal place for people watching while on an afternoon stroll with a frosty ice cream.
The east side of central park (parque central) is bordered by the vibrant Cathedral de la Mercedes. Made of an unusual brick red-colored metal, the church was built in Belgium in the 1890’s. It was shipped to the port city of Limon where it was carried by oxcart, piece by piece, to Grecia.
Beyond its charming locals and temperate climate, Grecia is known for unique attractions like the World of Snakes reptile museum and Las Cataratas de Los Chorros, a pair of pristine waterfalls set in a private reserve just five minutes from town. There is also a family-run butterfly garden and, for the history buff, the Casa de Cultura offers plenty of local folklore and colonial artifacts.
Adventurous travelers will enjoy canyoneering down the Chorros Waterfalls or bungee jumping off a 75-meter bridge over the Rio Colorado. Or visitors can simply relax with a massage or Jacuzzi soak in one of the modern hotels nearby. The artisan capital of Sarchi is a quick ten-minute drive from Grecia and offers souvenirs, wood handicrafts and a variety of beautiful, handmade furniture.
