Drake Bay:

Drake Bay, located on the northern tip of the Osa Peninsula, is one of the most remote and peaceful destinations in Costa Rica.

The town of Drake Bay quietly sits on the shores of Drake Bay (Bahia Drake), while Corcovado National Park and Cano Island Biological Reserve are each less than an hour away.

Eco-tourists will enjoy the array of activities to choose from.  Visitors may select, on a daily basis, activities ranging from horseback riding, dolphin and whale-watching tours, guided hikes in Corcovado National Park or to one of several waterfalls in the area, scuba diving, snorkeling, canopy tours, mangrove tours and sport fishing, among other things.

Most lodges offer all-inclusive packages, including transportation via air into Drake Bay, or boat shuttle service from Sierpe. Accommodations are rustic to luxuriously rustic (most places do not have air conditioning) and are limited.  Reservations are definitely recommended.  It is a long way to travel to find yourself without a room.  Many lodges are booked full from December 15th until April 15th

More About Drake Bay:

To describe Drake Bay is simple.  Imagine a small town situated along a quiet beach cove where one dirt road and a few houses and shops are scattered amidst a forest that quickly becomes dense and uninhabited as you leave town and head inland.   Hotels are sporadic and well-camouflaged among the vegetation.

What many people refer to as Drake Bay is actually the small village of Agujitas, one of the more developed towns on the western coast of the Osa Peninsula, which is not saying much.

Accessed only by dirt road, boat or plane, Agujitas offers little more in terms of development than a few restaurants and hotels, one disco, and a handful of cafes and small grocery stores.

The ocean waters around Drake Bay are well-known for dolphin and whale sightings, and for the warm, clear water and marine life at Caño Island.  See Things To Do in Drake Bay.

Travelers take note that the roads into the Osa Peninsula are often impassible during the wet season and often require 4-wheel drive during the dry season. It is not recommended to drive into Drake.

Around Drake Bay:

As you make your way south along the Peninsula from Agujitas towards Corcovado, there are several scattered hotels and lodges (accessed only by boat), some very nice, but little in the way of stores or other development.  There are no roads beyond the village of Agujitas, only a foot trail. Most of the hotels beyond Agujitas do not have 24-hour electricity.

Climate:

It is green year-round in the south Pacific, which means that even during the dry season, it still rains: it just rains less.  It really should be called the "drier" season.  Generally speaking, the drier season runs from December until mid-April, with very little rain in January, February and March.  It is warm and humid year round, with daily average highs in the mid to high eighties.  March is typically the hottest month.  September and October are the rainiest months.
