About:
If
the crowds of Jacó and Tamarindo are not your style, Dominical, a
tranquil beach town 28 miles south of Quepos, might become your
favorite hideaway.
Popular with surfers over the years,
Dominical has only recently seen a rise in tourism and development,
perhaps due to the partially paved and often bone-jarring roads leading
in from Quepos and San Isidro. This south Pacific town boasts a lovely
palm-fringed beach with rough, pounding surf and is flanked by massive
green mountains to the east. For the non-surfer, the breath-taking
scenery may inspire lots of hammock time, reading or watching boarders
tackle the big waves. Wildlife enthusiasts will love the nearby
Hacienda Barú National Wildlife Refuge, where biodiversity is evident
in the abundance of tropical animals and plants.
Swimmers and snorkelers can enjoy calmer waters in Ballena National Marine Park, just south of Dominical. It's also a hotspot for dolphin and whale watching. In this underwater park, named after the humpback whales that migrate there from December to April each year, visitors can
explore the beaches, mangrove forests and coral reefs. Green iguanas,
dolphins and sea turtles are frequently spotted in this diverse park.
Tour
companies in Dominical offer a variety of trips for thrill-seekers,
including a canopy tour and a tree-climbing tour. Sport fishing is also
taking off, as the waters are rife with sailfish, dorado and marlin.
The dry season months of December through April are the best for
offshore fishing here.
A few new hotels, surf camps and
Spanish language schools are popping up in town, a sure sign that
Dominical is now on the travelers’ radar.
